Software needed for browsing

To simplify access, both the Web site and CD-ROM can be accessed with a single tool - a World Wide Web browser. The contents of each consist of HTML documents, photos, and multimedia materials that are interconnected with hypermedia links. Furthermore, the CD-ROM is written in a format that can be read by an Apple Macintosh computer, a computer running Microsoft Windows, or a computer running Linux or another version of the UNIX operating system (e.g., Solaris).

Because many documents on the CD-ROM use conventional HTML, an arbitrary Web browser can be used to view them. However, additional browser facilities are needed to view graphics. In particular, to handle all materials, a browser must be able to display ShockWave or QuickTime movies and in-line photos in GIF format. Facilities are available for most browsers. A copy of the latest version of the Netscape browser can be downloaded at no cost from Web site:

http://www.netscape.com

Software that extends a browser's functionality to allow it to display an additional document type is known as a plugin. Animations on the CD-ROM require the Shockwave plugin from Macromedia, which is available at no cost from Web site:

http://www.macromedia.com

If a ShockWave plugin is unavailable, animations can also be displayed in QuickTime format. To use QuickTime, you must configure your browser with an appropriate plugin or helper application. You can obtain a QuickTime plugin for MacOS or Windows from Web site:

http://www.apple.com

If you are using Linux or UNIX, you will need a helper application such as xanim.
