Q & A on Router Statistics in HPOpenView
Q: I'm using Optivity on HPOpenView.. so they have this 5 groups of counters
for routers.. i.e
- Group 1 (IP Utilization%, IP Error%, IP Gauge)
- Group 2 (Packets Forwarded)
- Group 3 (In Datagrams)
- Group 4 (In Header Errors, In Invalid Destination Address, In Unknown
Protocol, In Lack Buffer Space)<
- Group 5 (Out lack Buffer Space, Out No Route)
these counters.. what do they represent?
A:
- 1 Statistics about IP datagram traffic
- 2 A count of all packets including IP and other protocols
- 3 Counts of IP datagrams that have arrived over each interface
- 4 A count of errors in incoming traffic, including valid packets that
were discarded because the router did not have space in memory
- 5 A count of packets discarded because the router lacked output buffer
space or did not havea route.
Q: could you pls elaborate on counters or which counters used to check network
performance...
A: A router is not performing well if it runs out of buffer space or if there
are other errors. As long as there are no errors, most managers focus on
``packets forwarded'' as a measure of performance.
